Wintertime Koselig (Coziness)

As winter descends here on the Seacoast of New Hampshire, I've seen and heard a few stories describing the Norwegian philosophy of Koselig, which loosely translates to Coziness. It is the conscious effort to light candles and fires, drink warm beverages and snuggle under blankets as a way to enjoy and relax during winter.

I like it.

As a former night snowmaker and resident of the White Mountains I have always believed there isn't bad weather, only bad gear. I have also understood the power of a lit fire to kindle a sense of calm, comfort and safety. In Norway, nearly every building has a fireplace for people to sit or stand near. This is true of public buildings as well as businesses and so on.

Here in the U.S. we've gotten rid of fireplaces. This, as with getting rid of passenger trains, is a shame. We don't need to pollute the air with endless fires burning for warmth, but to have a fireplace and sit in front of a fire is a pure joy. Sharing that warmth and comfort with others adds to that joy.

Now think of winter as an opportunity to spend a crisp, sunny day outside skiing or sledding or walking or skating followed by a warm meal and games in front of the fire or simply relaxing and listening to music. Not bad, kind of makes winter feel a little less cold.

So here's a few photos to create a fuller image of why winter can be great.
